Did you know that Windows comes with an option that will let you change the startup/shut down sound or any other sound on the operating system?

In this article, let’s take a look at the step-by-step guide on changing Windows startup sounds.

This will work with all versions of Windows including the recently launched Windows 11. So, without wasting any more time, let’s jump right in.

How to Change Windows Sounds

Step 1: In the case of Windows 8 and above users, You should disable fast startup mode to enable startup sound (this could affect your startup time).

To disable Fast Startup follow the step given below:

  • Right-click on the Windows icon in the taskbar and select ‘Power Option‘ from the popup menu or search for Power Option in the search.
  • In the power options window, on the left side, there is an option called Choose what power option to do, click on it.
  • Now click change the setting that’s are currently unavailable
  • Now, uncheck the option, turn on fast startup and click save changes

Step 2: The audio file which you want to play as windows sound should be in a .wav format, if not it will not play so you should convert it into .wav format.

Step 3: Now copy the audio file to Windows local disk. In most cases, it will be the C drive. There you will find the folder named ‘Windows’ open it. Inside it, you will find a folder named Media, paste your audio inside the media folder (path: C:\Windows\Media)

Step4: Right-click on the speaker icon located on the right side of the taskbar and select sound or search for sounds in the search bar.

Step 5: Now a box pop-ups check play windows start-up sound.

Step 6: To enable or change windows startup sound, look for an option called logon in the list select it and click browse now select the audio which we copied to the media folder. Do the same for all the sounds you want to change.

For some Windows 8 and above the user’s this option wouldn’t appear,

To enable it follow the steps given below:

  • Press Windows key + R or search for cmd. Now a command box appears, type ‘regedit‘  without the quotation and click OK.
  • Ok now a registry edit window appears Doble click on HKEY CURRENT USER to expand now expand ‘AppEvents‘. Now expand EventLabels.
  • Ok now find windows logon from that list and select it. In right-side double click on the option exclude from CPL.
  • Now change value data from 1 to 0 and click ok. do the same for logoff. Now logon and logoff option should be enabled in sound option.

Alternate method to change startup sound

For Windows 10 and Windows 11 users there are chances that startup sound

Method 1: Download a software called windows startup sound changer

  • Open it and click replace and select a .wav audio file that you want to play on startup.
  • After that click play to ensure that the file you have selected is the correct one then click exit.

Method 2:

  • If the above method didn’t work
  • Press windows key + r or search for cmd. Now a command box appears, type ‘shell:startup’  without the quotation  and click ok
  • Now a folder opens. Copy the audio file which you need to play on startup and paste its shortcut on the appeared folder. This method will work for sure.
